Hello friends of SHP! We are planning a board meeting of the Summer Honors Program Alumni Association (SHPAA) for Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Central time.
Please reply to this blog post with items you’d like to see added to the agenda.
The meeting will be online only.
In addition to board members, meetings are open to others in the SHPAA community, including parents, instructors, administrators, teachers, past board members, and those considering taking a leadership role in future.
Summer Honors Program Alumni Association September 13, 2021 Meeting Minutes
Draft meeting minutes. The meeting was held via Zoom.
Dave Burchell called the meeting to order at 7:03pm.
The meeting was attended by Carol K., Erica H. (secretary), Carmen P., Tim B., Dave B. (presiding), Mike P., Kaleb K. (treasurer), Dana T., Mike L., Nate W., and Brooke C.
Treasurer’s Report: Kaleb reported that our finances have not changed since the June meeting.
Secretary’s Report: Tim made a motion and Kaleb seconded. The June meeting minutes were approved as submitted.
Non-Profit Status: Kaleb restored our non-profit status so that we are in good standing with the state.
Meeting Cadence: Meetings will be held in roughly the following months: June (during SHP), August or September, November, and April or May
Next Meeting: It was decided that Mike P. would send out a Doodle the first week in October for our next meeting to be in the first half of November.
Agenda Items: Dave will take ownership of preparing an agenda for meetings going forward.
October 23: Tim’s Band is playing at the Minden Opera House
2021 SHP Committee: Tabled until next meeting. (See Item #6 in June minutes.)
Mission/Purpose: There was discussion on what our current mission/purpose is, and this warrants further discussion. Three main areas where tonight’s discussion focuses included: helping gifted students in the ESU #11 footprint, spreading the SHP model beyond ESU #11, and building networking ties between students and alumni.
Non-Profit/501c3 Status: Need clarity from Kaleb on the difference between these two items.
Following are the draft minutes from the June 19, 2021 SHPAA board meeting held via Zoom conference call.
Dave – start off –
Apologized for not being more active. Lots of things are going on with the pandemic.
Talked with Mike and others – get us on a good solid footing.
Regular meetings, keep in the know
Mike is the prodder – keeping Dave accountable
Run down top items
Kaleb has been working on non-profit status. Giving a treasurer’s report.
Setting regular meetings for this board. Some people said it was too little notice – Dave agreed. Just wants consistency. Wants a board meeting during or near Summer Honors. Meetings will be discussed later in the meeting.
Decide what kind of organization we should really be. Spend some time refining what it means
Should we be a formal organization with a roster of members – a cohesive group.
Do we need to handle money? Can we make what we want to have happen and leave it to someone else.
If we are going to have a money handling part – we need to be actively engaged.
Going around to give updates and to add to the agenda.
Mike Lewis – Went to summer honors 86-90. Founder of alumni association back in 96ish. History of the group has been waves of inactivity. Nice 35 year reunion.
Wants to talk about what can be guarded against these periods of inactivities.
Dana – went to summer honors for 5 years. Ready to help out. She sees this group as not unique in our issues.
Mike Pedersen – attended in 85-89 – same as Dana. Summer Honors was instrumental for him so he is ready to help make it stronger.
Kaleb Kinder – from Alma, summer honors in 14-18, teaching logic this year. Good first week, pursuing a community of truth.
Brooke Choquette – attended around 10, lives in KC. Wants to talk about DoY later and how it relates to what we need to do.
Working on paperwork to be in good standing with the state. David Koesters had kept it up. But, we did not have a 2017 or 2019 report to the state. We need to get our good standing back. This is why we need all the addresses for all directors on the board.
$1,726.28 current balance.
Please confirm – Kaleb
10 member board members
Dave – president, historian/publicity
Vice president – Dana
Erica – Secretary
Kaleb – Treasurer
Brittney – Membership chair
Events – open
At large – Mike L., Mike P., Brooke, Brenda, Mar Lee
Establishing next meeting
Open it up to all.
Dave – August/September, November, April/Early May, and the week between summer honors.
Dana, Mike L, Brooke, and Brittney all think it is a good idea
Brittney likes the November meeting. Talk to Janelle before so as initiatives start in January, we can help as needed.
Mike P and Kaleb – promote summer honors more
Mike P – wants someone at graduation to talk about SHPAA
Dave – set our next meeting with a range. Pick a date in September.
Dana – pick a month for book club, survey for month and then times for the month.
Nominate someone to send out a poll in August.
Action item – Mike P and Brittney can put a pull together. Early-July poll to send out.
Zoom information two week before date.
Dave, moved. Mike L seconded. All members agreed on action.
Committee – Britney and Kaleb
Getting information or getting people involved from this years summer honors
Brittney and Kaleb – Google form to get information from current students for SHPAA.
Dave, moved. All members agreed on action.
Deciding on what organization we should be.
Dana – networking/social should be a big part of it. Money is less of an issue.
Kaleb – likes what Dana said. Call networking primary function, secondary to help out summer honors – even in a networking setting.
Mike L – agrees with Dana and Kaleb on their points. Holdrege meeting years ago about outreach to house parents.
Is this still an issue? Not sure that it will come back. They are sending everyone home. Brittney does not think it will ever go back to before.
Several schools are using vans to transport kids.
Mike P – how is this impacting the social kids?
Brittney – format has changed. Small groups over lunch, after class they go straight to social activity.
Brooke – Agrees overall. Needs a more active membership and to provide value before charging for membership.
Brittney – 50th year coming up in 5-6 years.
Mike L – original mission – networking and support of SHP
Build and network a community as Brooke mentioned.
Dave – blog and summarize the 2021 SHP experience
Need to get together informally.
Kaleb – working on blog
Dave calls the meeting to the end. People can stay to talk.
Kick off a thank-you letter writing effort in appreciation of SHP houseparents, past and present
Get the ball rolling on a possible project during next summer’s SHP to benefit the current crop of students and instructors.
Info on how to join the meeting online and location of the venue in Lincoln will be announced soon. (Probably we’ll use Google Hangouts for the online accessibility and meet in person at a Lincoln Public Libraries meeting room.)
Pie and socializing after.

I’m excited to take a part in revitalizing the SHPAA and looking forward to working with my fellow SHP alums to help make the ’20s the best possible decade for SHPA. Hope to see you there!
On June 15th, SHPAA will join with SHP staff, supporters, and friends to celebrate
the retirement of Tim Burke and thank him for all his years of service at ESU #11.
Check out our Reunion page for more info.
It is our pleasure to announce the addition of Janelle Jack as our next High Ability Learner leader starting July 1, 2013. Janelle has big shoes to fill as current HAL leader Tim Burke retires after 26.5 years of serving our area Gifted students. Janelle’s skills and abilities will be used to continue and to grow ESU 11’s HAL program.
Janelle has been active in Gifted (HAL programming) since 1999 in various capacities such as being the Eustis-Farnam Gifted Coordinator; an active contributor in the Nebraska Association for the Gifted (NAG); helping at ESU 11 Summer Honors Program and presenting at NAG conferences. More specifically, Janelle served as the NAG President in 2008-2009 and on the NAG Board from 2005-2010.
Janelle plans to get a jump start on her new position by working with Tim Burke at the 2013 Summer Honors Program. Join our excitement and welcome Janelle to ESU 11’s High Ability Learner program.
Here you can find out how to become an SHPAA member, get information on applying for the annual SHPAA Scholarship, and learn about this year’s exciting reunion weekend we have planned in celebration of SHP’s 35th Anniversary.
SHP Founder Cindy (Anderson) Claassen will speak at Reunion Dinner! RSVP by June 8 to attend!
As you may know, in recent years, SHP has been badly stressed by financial cuts to our education system and now more than ever needs the support of alumni like you. As an SHP graduate or friend of the program, we need you to be vocal about the program’s value in your life and to participate as partners in the program’s strength and recovery. Each of us has been challenged to think differently and achieve more by this formative program.
SHPAA membership is free for all SHP alums and instructors, though we encourage higher levels of membership through donations. We also welcome participation from any alums who wish to become active members of the SHPAA board. Please contact us with any questions or suggestions you may have regarding SHPAA.
We also would like to help you stay connected to other alumni and friends of the program and invite you to participate in reunions or other gatherings of SHP alums. This year is SHP’s 35th Anniversary and we have a busy reunion weekend planned – we hope you’ll join us!
